“What am I going to do with you, Ely? You deserve a punishment for teasing me, not a reward, but I want you so fucking bad I’m tempted to do just that. To reward you for being a good rabbit and running from the predator.” (p. 268)

Series: Oakmount Elite, Book 3
Review:
First, I would like to thank the author and Candi Kane PR for providing me with a free review copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
The darkness significantly outweighs the spice.
Elyse lives and works in Sebastian’s mansion. He saved her life, but she cannot remember the circumstances of that night–or his involvement. Sebastian keeps her at a distance, bullying her and intimidating her, but there is a thread of desire that connects them. When her past comes back to haunt her, Sebastian has no choice but to save her–even if saving her means degrading her sexually.
The Prey is the first book in a duet within the Oakmount Elite series. Billed as a dark romance, it’s more darkness than spice. The spice in the story is surprisingly tame. Regarding the maturity level of the characters, the book would best fit the new adult audience. While the university content is minimal, Sebastian and Elyse are both college students and behave accordingly.
J.L. Beck has an immersive writing style, writing in first-person dual POV. Her writing allows you to experience the emotions and reactions of the characters intimately. The action and plot are captivating and the pacing is well-balanced, but I just couldn’t bond with the FMC or MMC. The book ends on a cliffhanger, so reading
The Predator is a must.
There is a long list of trigger warnings provided at the beginning that should be consulted prior to starting the duet. Some of the content will be very shocking and very triggering for some readers.
Audience: new adult/adult
Trigger warnings: gun violence, kidnapping, death, murder, stalking, grooming/pedophilia/statutory rape (off page, MMC is victim), human trafficking, bullying, humiliation/forced public sex act, manipulation, animal cruelty/death, gaslighting, substance abuse
Recommended for fans of: dark romance, forced proximity, amnesia, boss/employee, enemies to lovers, degradation/praise, primal play, knife play, dub con
Publisher's Synopsis:
Filthy rich. Monstrous. Vile.
He calls me prey.
I call him a bully.
Sebastian Arturo isn’t just cruel, he’s downright terrifying.
With piercing green eyes, a body made for doing
very bad things, and a charming demeanor, it’s no wonder everyone thinks the world of him… everyone except
me.
When I wake up with pieces of my memory missing he’s the only one who can give me answers.
But he doesn't give me answers, instead he tells me to stop asking questions, or
else...
I heed his warning and do my best to avoid him but since he’s my boss and I live in his house that's kinda difficult.
Then one night his hate for me reaches its breaking point...and the lines blur.
Hate twists into lustful obsession.
His cruel words become seductive praises.
One touch sparks a raging inferno of desire, and I find myself burned to ash beneath his fingertips.
Just when I think I'll finally find happiness my memories return bringing with them a vicious truth.
Turns out the man I’m falling for isn't who I thought he was... and escape isn't an option.
He has me right where he wants, caught in a trap, just like
prey.
